6 Movies That Were Made to Launch Franchises, In Honor of ‘World War Z’ Starring Brad Pitt

Movie #6 – Godzilla

Year – 1998

The marketing campaign boldly claimed, “Size matters” – a claim that would bite them in the ass. The film’s opening weekend took in $55 million. That was a lot of money back in 1998. But industry experts were expecting it to break the (at the time) record of $90 million. It didn’t even come close. And when it comes to box office numbers, well…size matters.

This was the intended to be the first of many Godzilla films. But the film was met with such resounding indifference that plans were quickly scuttled. Fear not, monster fans. Godzilla is getting the full reboot treatment in 2014 starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson from Kick-Ass.

I totally dig this movie. It should be considered for a re-boot. Get Jet Li to play Chiun, and oh… let’s say… Josh Brolin to play Remo Williams. Couldn’t do any worse in the theaters than the original did!
