DVD Picks of the Week- “The Expendables”, “Eat Pray Love.”, and More

The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

A team of mercenaries head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.  That’s pretty much all you need to know for this plot because, let’s be honest, you are not seeing this film for the plot.  You are seeing it because of the cast, and it is quite a cast.  Stallone.  Statham.  Li.  Lundgren.  Couture.  Austin.  Crews.  Rourke.  Willis.  Schwarzenegger.  It doesn’t surpirse me that he got this kind of cast because most of these guys needed some work to do, but it is still pretty impressive.  But let’s actually get to if the movie is actually good.  The action was solid but not mind blowing.  I was expecting a little more out of it.  But if you love action and you love these actors then this is a must see.

Eat Pray Love [Blu-ray] / DVD

A married woman realizes how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to “find herself”.  I have heard a lot about the book from friends and family that have read it, and they all say the same thing.  The character is annoying.  She is unrelatable.  She is spoiled.  Why would you want to read about a person that went on this great globe trotting adventure when you don’t even like her.  I’m not sure if the movie is similar to this, but I do know one thing.  If all of this is true, then Julia Roberts was perfect casting because people love Ms. Roberts.

I’m Still Here [Blu-ray] / DVD

A film documenting Joaquin Phoenix’s transition from the acting world to a career as an aspiring rapper.  I will never forget the moment I saw the infamous Letterman video.  I was sitting in my dorm room, half asleep, and not wanting to go to class so early.  Within thirty seconds I was saying to myself “WTF?”.  This almost tops my favorite Crispin Glover interview on Letterman.  The whole thing just seems weird to me and leaves me with no desire to actually sit down and watch the film.  I don’t like Phoenix enough to be curious about it, and I think if I have seen the trailer then I get the general idea of what is going on.

Which of these are you looking to buy today?  Are you excited about something that I didn’t spotlight?  Let us know in the comments below.
