“Glee” Star Diana Agron Responds to Racy GQ Photos

The Parents Television Council is up in arms over a photoshoot that involved Glee castmembers Lea Michele, Diana Argon, and Cory Montieth. Saying, “It is disturbing that GQ, which is explicitly written for adult men, is sexualizing the actresses who play high school-aged characters on ‘Glee’ in this way. It borders on pedophilia. Sadly, this is just the latest example of the overt sexualization of young girls in entertainment.”

Agron responded with, “In the land of Madonna, Britney, Miley, Gossip Girl, other public figures and shows that have pushed the envelope and challenged the levels of comfort in their viewers and fans…we are not the first. Now, in perpetuating the type of images that evoke these kind of emotions, I am sorry. If you are hurt or these photos make you uncomfortable, it was never our intention. And if your eight-year-old has a copy of our GQ cover in hand, again I am sorry. But I would have to ask, how on earth did it get there?”

“I mean, come on! We’re obviously not in high school,”  Glee co-star Mark Salling said in a radio interview. “It’s tongue-in-cheek that we’re in high school, so whatevs . . . There’s more important things to worry about in the world.”

I feel I should weigh in on the matter. Both Agron and Michele are 24 year old women, not “young girls”, so it does not in fact border on pedophilia. Second of all, sexuality is a natural part of life, and it is people like the PTC who continue to make sex into something shameful.  If you are worried about your kids seeing it, then like Agron says, you should probably being monitoring your child more closely so they aren’t exposed to that.  Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it inherently wrong, and it doesn’t mean other people can’t get a kick out of it.

  • I understand the talk of the cover and photos. These young women have not done anything this sexy. But to say it borders on pedophelia just makes me laugh. If the council is going to be upset about something then have issues with the episodes that feature these "teens" having sex with each other without being in relationships. Then keep in mind that you are raising a stink about a show that preaches acceptance and tolerance in a teenage world that so desperately needs it.
