Theatre Review: Cirque du Soleil SONGBLAZERS at The Fabulous Fox

Cirque du Soleil brings its newest show Songblazers to the Fabulous Fox with a flair for the artistic and a love for country music’s great influences of the past and present. Wrapped in a carnival/circus atmosphere, the show features a young songwriter Dusty (played by the multi-talented aerialist, Teo Spencer) on a journey to find his voice. He partners with Wyatt (honey-voiced musician Steve Ray Ladson) as they travel through acrobatic and musical numbers to find stardom.

The show is a high-energy spectacle, featuring an incredible fusion of live country music with breathtaking performances by aerialists, acrobats, dancers, jugglers and more. Among the standout acts are Olga Makhausta on the Acro Bar and Bettina Bogdan and Krisztina Vellai on the Aerial Body Trapeze, captivating the audience with their daring skills. Many of the acrobatic performers also join the band on stage, singing or playing instruments. A special mention goes to Wayne Wilson as the Train Brakeman, who stole the show as the comedic “clown.” His performance brought laughter throughout the story, and his train act was a clear favorite with the audience.

For country music fans, the production is a delight. Featuring a mix of classic and contemporary country songs, the show offers something for every country enthusiast, whether you’re enjoying familiar tunes or discovering new ones along the way. The vocalists bring these songs to life beautifully, especially Wyatt and Mother May, played by the delightful Sweet Megg. The set is visually stunning and plays a vital role in the show, featuring a grand train that seamlessly transforms between a train, bar, and barn—traditional hallmarks of country music themes.

The storyline lacks cohesion and doesn’t add much to the overall production, feeling more like an afterthought to the otherwise entertaining acts. In fact, it can be somewhat distracting due to its lack of follow-through. However, audiences will still be captivated by the high-flying acrobatics and toe-tapping country music, which more than make up for the weak narrative. Despite the story, the performances are what truly shine and keep the audience engaged throughout.

Cirque du Soleil’s Songblazers is a fun and enjoyable visual and musical experience, blending the company’s signature acrobatics with live country music. The show runs at The Fabulous Fox Theater through October 27.
